Jack and Jill Moms

Bobbi Brown Cosmetics hosted a private event for the Jack and Jill moms of Montclair, New Jersey,

and we were there.

When Bobbi Brown The Studio, located in Montclair, New Jersey opened its doors to the Jack and Jill moms of the city, in celebration of the organization's 10-year anniversary, the 50-plus highly accomplished African-American women who attended didn't think twice about leaving their Blackberries at the makeup emporium's front door for an evening that was all about them.

Between sips of champagne topped with strawberries, red or white wine, and noshing on grilled shrimp skewers and collard green rolls, they listened intently as Bobbi, the queen of clean-and natural-looking makeup, shared some of her most effective and prized skincare and makeup tips. Then the 17 makeup artists stationed inside the luxe studio showed the moms how to enhance their features using products from Bobbi's Black Velvet fall collection.

"The evening was enlightening," said Joyce Wade, President of the Montclair chapter, moments after her makeover. "I learned not to be worried about my dark circles because I can diminish their appearance with a corrector and a concealer," continued the pecan-complected mom who works for a non-profit. "Before I was only using a concealer and now I see the difference."

With skintones that ranged from cafe au lait to the deepest of magohany, the beauty tips that received the biggest buzz included essential skincare (the importance of hydrating the skin), key secrets for applying concealer ("I was putting it in the wrong place all these years," explained one of the moms), stepping up the drama with a smoky eye look.

For Paula Tuffin, the founding President, Carolyn "Cookie" Mason, the chapter's Parlimentarian, and Natalie Alves, a member of the chapter, in addition to learning tricks of the trade about concealers, the night's best bonus came with their smoky eye lessons. "I normally wear very little makeup," explains Tuffin, whose flawless, ebony-hued complexion sparkled even more after her makeover. "I am a partner in a law firm and it is always good to have attention on the eyes and now I know how to achieve that."

Likewise for the caramel-complected Mason, who just happens to be a dead-ringer for Pam Grier. "I normally do just a little eye makeup because I don't have a lot of room on my lids, so I didn't believe it [Smoky eye] would look good on me. Now I know better."

Alves, who admitted she didn't know what a smoky eye was, was primarily concerned with diminishing the appearance of her dark circles."I don't like to put too much dark makeup on because it makes my eyes look darker," she shared. The thoughts post makeover? "I love it."

Caryn Cooper, who organized the event and serves as the chapter's Editor/Historian, gained a different kind of insight for enhancing her magohany shade. Typically shying away from wearing much makeup, she allowed the artist to show how easily she could enhance and highlight her rich hue. "I don't really wear a lot of makeup, but tonight I learned I could be bold and fabulous with a little bit of color."
